Portugal – private quinta, Colares (2014)

Advisory visit to a quinta aspiring to the practice of permaculture.  Key recommendations for initial advances: integration of animals into food systems to improve animal welfare and put animals into vastly more productive function; enhanced use of nitrogen fixing trees and ground covers in food forest areas; introduction of hot-composting; use of rocket stove for heating, utilising canas (a plant previously considered as a nuisance).

Nitrogen Pollution and the EU Environment (2013)

On behalf of UWE’s Science Communication Unit, and for the EU Directorate General for the Environment, Tom authored this in-depth report on nitrogen pollution and the EU environment.  This included the potentially important recommendation to intensify mainstream research into ecological agriculture in order to assist the abatement of nitrogen pollution across Europe.

Portugal: mainframe design of water catchment and settlement, Alentejo region (2013)

Design of 26Ha area to restore native woodland and hydrological functioning in a location suffering fire and desertification, and to provide secure water and food supply to an eco-community.  Location incorporates two side-valleys.  Design includes swales, two earth dams, check-dam, water tanks, fish ponds, cell grazing, food forests, farm forestry and crop production. Various key features of built environment considered, such as solar heating and cooling, access, sanitation, etc.

Creation of a sustainability framework for the developers of a new town/city in Kwa Zulu Natal, featuring training in The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development and specific advice on carbon neutrality and land management for the provision of local livelihoods and ecosystem services.

Tofo, Mozambique (2011)

Permaculture design for a house on a sand dune facing a coastal lagoon.  Featuring windbreaks, nitrogen fixation, water capture and efficient usage, and diverse perennial food plants and annual growing spaces.  Also advice on local waste management to avoid contamination of lagoon, and water management to reduce malaria.
